Standing Firm on Biblical Standards

Session Position on Biblical Standards for Ordination & Marriage

The Session of the Arkport First Presbyterian Church will stand firm upon the biblical definition of marriage as being between one man and one woman.

We are formally protesting the actions of the 221st General Assembly of the PCUSA in its approval of same-sex marriage.

At Arkport Presbyterian we will continue to teach a biblical view of marriage between one man and one woman.  God is the creator and author of marriage.  God alone has the authority to define marriage.  God placed one man and one woman together.

To become an officer in our church, Elder, Deacon, or Pastor, one must agree to live within the biblical, historical, sexual ethic and to not perform same-sex marriages nor allow such marriages to be performed in this church.

That said, we hold fast to Christ’s teachings that all who sincerely seek a relationship with Jesus Christ are welcome in this particular church and are free to participate within the fellowship of believers even though they may not agree with this interpretation.

As the people of God, we are committed to following Jesus, taking part in his redemptive mission to the world, and believe we are sent out to join Him in His mission in the Village of Arkport and beyond.  Our essential identity is found in Jesus Christ.  We are a congregation that seeks to be constantly led by the Holy Spirit under the authority of the Bible, which is the authoritative Word of God and the all-sufficient rule for faith and life.  We believe we are called to be witnesses for the Gospel message in every time and place.

We stand on the Word of God, including, but not limited to the following:

Galatians 1:10  For am I now seeking the approval of man, or of God? Or am I trying to please man? If I were still trying to please man, I would not be a servant of Christ.

1 Thessalonians 2:4  but just as we have been approved by God to be entrusted with the gospel, so we speak, not to please man, but to please God who tests our hearts.

Genesis 2:22-24And the rib that the Lord God had taken from the man he made into a woman and brought her to the man. 23 Then the man said,
“This at last is bone of my bones and flesh of my flesh; she shall
be called Woman, because she was taken out of Man.”
24Therefore a man shall leave his father and his mother and hold fast to his wife, and they shall become one flesh.

Leviticus 18:22  You shall not lie with a male as with a woman; it is an abomination.

Romans 1:18-32  For the wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men, who by their unrighteousness suppress the truth. 19 For what can be known about God is plain to them, because God has shown it to them. 20 For his invisible attributes, namely, his eternal power and divine nature, have been clearly perceived, ever since the creation of the world, in the things that have been made. So they are without excuse. 21 For although they knew God, they did not honor him as God or give thanks to him, but they became futile in their thinking, and their foolish hearts were darkened. 22 Claiming to be wise, they became fools, 23 and exchanged the glory of the immortal God for images resembling mortal man and birds and animals and creeping things.

24 Therefore God gave them up in the lusts of their hearts to impurity, to the dishonoring of their bodies among themselves, 25 because they exchanged the truth about God for a lie and worshiped and served the creature rather than the Creator, who is blessed forever! Amen.

26 For this reason God gave them up to dishonorable passions. For their women exchanged natural relations for those that are contrary to nature; 27 and the men likewise gave up natural relations with women and were consumed with passion for one another, men committing shameless acts with men and receiving in themselves the due penalty for their error.

28 And since they did not see fit to acknowledge God, God gave them up to a debased mind to do what ought not to be done. 29 They were filled with all manner of unrighteousness, evil, covetousness, malice. They are full of envy, murder, strife, deceit, maliciousness. They are gossips, 30 slanderers, haters of God, insolent, haughty, boastful, inventors of evil, disobedient to parents, 31 foolish, faithless, heartless, ruthless. 32 Though they know God’s righteous decree that those who practice such things deserve to die, they not only do them but give approval to those who practice them.

1 Corinthians 6:9-11  Or do you not know that the unrighteous will not inherit the kingdom of God?  Do not be deceived: neither the sexually immoral, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor men who practice homosexuality, 10 nor thieves, nor the greedy, nor drunkards, nor revilers, nor swindlers will inherit the kingdom of God. 11 And such were some of you.  But you were washed, you were sanctified, you were justified in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ and by the Spirit of our God.

2 Thessalonians 9-12  The coming of the lawless one is by the activity of Satan with all power and false signs and wonders, 10 and with all wicked deception for those who are perishing, because they refused to love the truth and so be saved. 11 Therefore God sends them a strong delusion, so that they may believe what is false, 12 in order that all may be condemned who did not believe the truth but had pleasure in unrighteousness.
