Specialty analog foundry Tower Semiconductor Ltd  of Migdal Haemek, Israel and Xscape Photonics Inc of Fort Lee, NJ and Santa Clara, CA, USA (which  is funded by industry leaders such as NVIDIA and Cisco, and develops silicon photonics interconnects  for AI data centers) have  announced the successful prototyping and validation kit availability of what  is claimed to be the industry’s first on-chip, optically pumped,  multi-wavelength laser source. Built on Tower’s mature, high-volume PH18 silicon photonics platform,  the solution supports CWDM and DWDM wavelength grids and is tailored for AI data-center fabrics,  where bandwidth density, power efficiency and scalability are essential. The optical interconnect market for AI data centers is expected to  grow, driven by the rising demand for high-speed, low-latency connectivity in  hyperscale AI deployments. According to market analayst firm LightCounting,  sales of optical transceivers and LPO/CPO for AI clusters are expected to double from 2024 to more  than $10bn in 2026, then reach $20bn by 2030. Tower and Xscape says that their latest  development enables a path toward high performance, high reliability, lower cost  and a simplified supply chain by monolithically embedding programmable  multi-color lasers on-chip, pumped optically by a single CW external laser. It also eliminates the need to source multiple externally modulated lasers  or require hybrid III-V integration. Xscape’s solution simplifies design,  reduces latency and component count, and is said to be especially  impactful for GPU-to-GPU and GPU-to-HBM optical links in AI clusters. Cuando se trata de redes totalmente fotónicas, la propuesta para los operadores de centros de datos es atractiva.  “No hay conmutadores eléctricos de paquetes en absoluto”, afirma James Regan sobre la novedosa arquitectura basada en la luz desarrollada por su empresa, Oriole Networks. “Así que, con todos los conmutadores y los transceptores que los conectan, se ha perdido toda esa jerarquía. Cada servidor se comunica directamente con todos los demás, sin ningún punto intermedio”. Pero si la tecnología está lista para reemplazar las arquitecturas de red tradicionales es otra cuestión.  Fotones en la sala de datos  El traslado de información en un centro de datos suele depender en gran medida de conmutadores de paquetes, que convierten los datos digitales almacenados en servidores para que puedan transmitirse como señales eléctricas a través de cables de cobre o fibra.  Este proceso de conmutación requiere muchos chips, que consumen mucha energía y generan cantidades considerables de calor. Además, es ineficiente, ya que los datos a menudo tienen que rebotar entre varios servidores antes de llegar a su destino.  Y con la cantidad de información que fluye a través de los centros de datos aumentando exponencialmente, gracias al crecimiento de la popularidad de los sistemas de IA, la conmutación se ha convertido en un punto de presión para muchas empresas. Oriole Networks, que surgió del University College London (UCL) del Reino Unido en 2023, tiene quizás la visión fotónica más ambiciosa de todas. Pretende reemplazar toda la infraestructura de red del centro de datos con tecnología fotónica. Además de un nuevo equipo de red, esto implicaría software especializado y un concentrador de hardware para controlar el destino de la información.  El sistema se basa en 20 años de investigación del profesor George Zervas y su equipo, explica Regan. El profesor Zervas es profesor de sistemas ópticos en red en la UCL y uno de los cofundadores de Oriole. El sistema que diseñó no se trata de un simple artilugio ni de una tecnología específica, afirma Regan. Se trata de un conjunto completo de tecnologías interconectadas, todas patentadas, que juntas conforman nuestra solución.  – Oriole Networks  Regan, un veterano de la industria de la fotónica que fue contratado por los fundadores de Oriole para ayudar a darle vida a su visión, cree que este enfoque radical para rediseñar las redes de centros de datos es necesario para hacer realidad la promesa de la fotónica.  “Si se quieren obtener beneficios reales, hay que eliminar por completo la conmutación electrónica de paquetes”, argumenta. “Google introdujo sus conmutadores en varios de sus centros de datos; son muy lentos, pero permiten reconfigurar la red según la demanda y se complementan con la conmutación electrónica de paquetes”.  “Lo que estamos haciendo es mucho más fundamental que eso, porque está diseñado para gestionar los flujos de datos de un servidor a otro de forma arbitraria sin ralentizarlos”.  Debido a esto, Oriole está promocionando algunos grandes beneficios, en términos de eficiencia, pero también en lo que respecta al tiempo que lleva entrenar modelos de IA.  “Al entrenar o ejecutar un modelo de lenguaje extenso, se cambia constantemente de GPU”, dice Regan. “Eso no es muy eficiente porque la mayor parte del tiempo las GPU están esperando a que la red responda”.  El uso de la fotónica podría eliminar el tiempo de espera, según Oriole, gracias a la capacidad de las GPU para interactuar entre sí. Además, se pueden producir muchas más interacciones simultáneamente, acelerando aún más el proceso.
